Bathroom Remodel — California license requirements
01 The project
The starting point is the work itself — Bathroom Remodel in California. The job determines which trades are involved, and the trades determine which license classifications may be required.
| Component | Trade |
|---|---|
| Plumbing | Plumbing |
| Electrical | Electrical |
| Tile | Tile |
| Framing | Framing |
| Drywall | Drywall |
| Painting | Painting |
02 Jurisdiction
This project is evaluated for California — state licensing by CSLB under Chapter 9 of the Business and Professions Code, plus the local permit layer (cities and counties issue building permits). California jurisdiction page.
We have not verified city/county permit rules for any Californiajurisdiction. State requirements are not the complete story for any locality.
03 Trade → license
Relations below are recorded per state — only this jurisdiction's classifications are shown.
Trades involved: Plumbing, Electrical, Tile, Framing, Drywall, Painting.
- Component basis C-36 — Plumbing Contractor confirmed S-36 rule CA-BATHROOM-REMODELPlumbing component basis (official C-36 definition). B-2 minor-alteration exception for fixture installation is limited to contracts with >=3 unrelated trades (BPC §7057.5(c)(3)).
- Component basis C-10 — Electrical Contractor confirmed S-31 rule CA-BATHROOM-REMODELElectrical component basis (official C-10 definition). Same B-2 minor-alteration caveat as the plumbing component.
- Component basis C-54 — Ceramic and Mosaic Tile Contractor confirmed S-39 rule CA-BATHROOM-REMODELTile component basis (official C-54 definition).
- Component basis C-33 — Painting and Decorating Contractor confirmed S-35 rule CA-BATHROOM-REMODELPainting component basis (official C-33 definition). NO B or B-2 row is asserted for this project: the prime path (B vs B-2) is deliberately NOT concluded by the rule — it depends on unrelated-trade count and structural work (BPC §7057 / §7057.5).
04 Scope
What the official sources say about the work involved — typed assertions, never a boolean "covers". Interpretations are marked as such.
- Officially excluded C-54 Hollow Or Structural Partition Tile (may_not_perform) CCR T16 D8 Art 3 — C-54 definition (final clause) S-39 Official exclusion verbatim in the classification definition.
- Officially included C-10 Electrical Wires Fixtures Apparatus Raceways Conduits (may_perform) CCR T16 D8 Art 3 — C-10 definition S-31 Core electrical scope verbatim from the official CSLB classification detail page (Research report §7).
- Officially included C-10 Solar Photovoltaic Cells (may_perform) CCR T16 D8 Art 3 — C-10 definition S-31 C-10 officially covers PV cells (electrical scope of a solar project). Distinct from C-46 (whole solar system) and from C-20 solar HVAC — see rule CA-SOLAR paths.
- Officially excluded C-36 Forced Warm Air Units (may_not_perform) CCR T16 D8 Art 3 — C-36 definition (c) S-36 Official exclusion verbatim in the definition. Forced warm-air units sit in the C-20 definition scope (S-32) instead.
- Officially included C-36 Water Heater And Fluid Heating Equipment Installation (may_perform) CCR T16 D8 Art 3 — C-36 definition (e) S-36 Backs the water-heater-replacement project component (Research report §9). Building-permit interaction is the local layer (BPC §7031.5, S-42).
- Our interpretation bathroom-remodel General Building Prime Contract (may_perform) derived from BPC §7057 (Research report §9) S-03 — our reading of the statute, not an official CSLB statement.INTERPRETATION (assertion_type D): Research report §9 concluded that a bathroom remodel can be prime-contracted by a B when the written contract spans ≥2 unrelated trades. D-rows are ALWAYS visibly marked as our interpretation in any rendered UI (Research report §6.1).

07 The prime-contract question is open
Whether the prime contract belongs to a B or a B-2 depends on the unrelated-trade count and on structural work in the written contract (BPC §7057 / §7057.5). The rule does not conclude this, we do not conclude it either, and no B/B-2 row is asserted for this project. The project-level scope assertion about a B prime path is marked Our interpretation — it is our reading of §7057 applied to the component analysis, not a CSLB statement about bathroom remodels.
