Contractor license requirements, traced to official sources

Deterministic compliance data for contractors and the people who hire them — each claim linked to the official document behind it, with the date it was verified. Conflicts between official documents stay visible; anything unverified stays unpublished.

01 What can you verify?

One question, six layers. Each layer is a real page type on this site, and every answer is traced to an official document — nothing is summarized from memory.

  1. 01ProjectWhat work is being done?Roof replacement, bathroom remodel, minor work…
  2. 02ClassificationWhich statutory category does it fall under? The official category text, verbatim from the statute.
  3. 03LicenseWhich credential does that category require?Certified, registered, classified — per jurisdiction.
  4. 04RequirementsExam, experience, bond, insurance — what must hold? Each condition listed with its source and date.
  5. 05Local permit layerWhat the state does not decide.County and city permits and registration stay local.
  6. 06Official sourcesWhere every line above comes from.A document, an authority, a verification date.

02 Every claim is evidence

A statement without a source is a guess. Every requirement on this site carries its official source, the statutory citation, the authority behind it and the date it was last verified — so you can audit the claim instead of trusting it.

  • Where two official documents disagree — for example the minor-work exemption published as $500 by a CSLB FAQ and $1,000 by statute — the disagreement is published as an open conflict, never silently resolved. See the documented conflict.
  • Where the sources do not determine an answer, the result is NOT_DETERMINED — not a guess.
  • Source badges like S-40 appear next to claims across the site and link straight to the official document.

Minor-work license exemption — $1,000 with four additional conditions

Chapter 9 (contractor licensing) does not apply to a single undertaking/project whose aggregate contract price for labor, materials and all other items is less than $1,000, ONLY IF: the work does not require a building permit, the person performing it employs no one for the project, the work is not part of a larger or major operation, the price is not split to evade the chapter, and the person does not advertise as a contractor.

03 Coverage

26 jurisdictions are researched in depth. Every other state is visible on the map but has no page — we do not publish pages we have not verified against that state's own official sources.

04 Project guides

Real projects, answered end to end: the classification that applies, the requirements behind it, any exemption that could remove the licensing question entirely, and the local permit layer the state never decides.

Trade deep-dive: Roofing (C-39).

05 Verify independently

This site is a map, not the territory. Check any license directly on the official lookup and treat the licensing authority as the final source of truth.
