Solar Installation — Oklahoma license requirements
01 The project
The starting point is the work itself — Solar Installation in Oklahoma. The job determines which trades are involved, and the trades determine which license classifications may be required.
| Component | Trade |
|---|---|
| Solar energy system | Solar |
| Electrical interconnection | Electrical |
02 Jurisdiction
This project is evaluated for Oklahoma — the trade-license, no-general- contractor state. The Construction Industries Board (CIB) licenses or registers exactly four industries (electrical, mechanical, plumbing and roofing) and states that general contractors need no state license while trade licences ARE required to perform or offer licensed trade work. A trade contractor licence stays inactive until the CIB receives a $5,000 corporate surety bond and $50,000 commercial general liability insurance; every licence expires on the last day of the licensee's birth month. Oklahoma jurisdiction page.
Permit fees, local construction rules and any municipal contractor registration were not researched and remain LOCAL_AUTHORITY_REQUIRED. The mechanical commercial boundary is a documented conflict (CONFLICT-OK-001) and the roofing registration threshold is contradicted by an unverified third-party claim (CONFLICT-OK-002); both rules return NOT_DETERMINED rather than guessing. State requirements are not the complete story for any locality.
03 Trade → license
Relations below are recorded per state — only this jurisdiction's classifications are shown.
Trades involved: Solar, Electrical.
- May require ELEC-CONTRACTOR-UNLIMITED — Unlimited Electrical Contractor (no scope limit) reported S-OK-CIB-YOUR-INDUSTRY rule OK-SOLAR-CREDENTIALOklahoma issues NO solar licence; a photovoltaic installation's power circuits, inverter and interconnection are electrical work requiring an electrical contractor licence. 'reported' because the conclusion is assembled from the electrical scope plus the absence of a solar credential (SCOPE-OK-NO-SOLAR), not a single verbatim sentence (rule OK-SOLAR-CREDENTIAL).
- Component basis ROOFING-REGISTRATION — Registered Roofing Contractor (+ Commercial Endorsement for commercial work) confirmed S-OK-OAC-158-85-2-1 rule OK-ROOFING-REGISTRATIONCONDITIONAL — where the PV array is mounted through the roof covering as part of roofing contractor work, the roofing registration applies; module mounting that is not roofing work does not trigger it (rule OK-ROOFING-REGISTRATION).
04 Scope
What the official sources say about the work involved — typed assertions, never a boolean "covers". Interpretations are marked as such.
- Officially included ELEC-CONTRACTOR-UNLIMITED Electrical Contracting Without Scope Limitation (may_perform) OAC 158:40; CIB Electrical Contractor page S-OK-CIB-ELEC-CONTRACTOR The only electrical category with no scope limit.
- Officially included ROOFING-REGISTRATION Roofing Contractor Work Under A Registration Plus Commercial Endorsement (may_perform) OAC 158:85; Roofing Contractor Registration Act S-OK-OAC-158-85-2-1 Roofing is the only Oklahoma credential called a REGISTRATION; the term is preserved (research §B). The Act's own exclusions could not be read (PDF unreachable) — research §P.
- Officially excluded ROOFING-REGISTRATION Cib Enforcement Of Workmanship And Business Disputes (may_not_perform) CIB Roofing page; Roofing Contractor Registration Act S-OK-CIB-ROOFING An honest enforcement boundary the roof-replacement page states (rule OK-ROOFING-SCOPE).
- Requires another classification solar-installation Electrical Contractor License No Solar Specific Credential (requires) CIB Your Industry page; CIB Electrical industry page S-OK-CIB-YOUR-INDUSTRY Project-scope row (no solar classification exists). 'reported' because the conclusion is assembled from the electrical scope plus the absence of a solar credential (rule OK-SOLAR-CREDENTIAL).

| No standalone solar credential — a PV installation is electrical work CIB Your Industry page + CIB Electrical CE subject list (read 2026-10-05) | exemption | Oklahoma issues no solar-specific licence or registration: the CIB licenses exactly the four industries (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, roofing) and publishes no solar programme. A photovoltaic installation's power circuits, inverters and interconnection are electrical work, so the electrical contractor licence applies (rule OK-TRADE-LICENSE); the solar trade appears in the electrical continuing-education subject list ('alternative energy systems including energy storage'), confirming that PV is treated as electrical work. | S-OK-CIB-YOUR-INDUSTRYSource S-OK-CIB-YOUR-INDUSTRY — Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB)CIB — Your Industry (the six regulated industries) — CIB Your Industry page + CIB Electrical CE subject list (read 2026-10-05) https://oklahoma.gov/cib/your-industry.html Retrieved 2026-10-05 · last verified 2026-10-05 Read in full 2026-10-05 (HTTP 200, official). 11 Permit and verification layer
Oklahoma separates the credential from the permit and the locality: the STATE decides who may perform licensed trade work (the CIB trade licence or roofing registration), while the city or county issues the building permit and — because there is no statewide general-contractor licence — regulates general building contractors itself. The permit and its rules are local — LOCAL_AUTHORITY_REQUIRED. S-OK-CIB-HOME
