Nevada Contractor License Classifications

Nevada classifies the LICENSE itself: 14 rows are seeded here — Class B (General Building) with its three residential/commercial subclasses, and eleven primary Class C specialty classifications — each carrying the verbatim official NAC scope text, the statutory citation and its source. The board publishes the full surface as Class A (General Engineering A-1…A-25), Class B (B-1…B-7), Class AB and 36 primary Class C classifications; subclasses never stand alone as licenses (FAQ #10: they combine under one primary license).

Verified 2026-10-0414 classifications1 credential shapesIndexation gate: passed

01 One license, one business, no price gate

BUSINESS LICENSE (NSCB)+CLASSIFICATION + SUBCLASSES≠LOCAL LAYER (NRS 624.035)
  • No price gate anywhere — no classification decision on this page depends on contract price: NRS 624.700 requires the license at ANY price (verified absence of a statewide threshold). S-NV-624-700
  • One license per PRIMARY classification — NSCB FAQ #10 (verbatim): "A separate license is required for each primary classification. Multiple sub classifications within the same primary classification can be combined under one license." That is why C-1d/C-1f/C-1h appear as scope TEXT inside the C-1 row, never as rows.
  • The license belongs to the business — qualified by an individual with 4 full years in the classification within the preceding 15 years (NRS 624.260(6)); one natural person may not qualify more than one active license without the 25%/common-parent/public-benefit exceptions. S-NV-624-260
  • Cross-cutting scope rules (NRS 624.220(4)) — a specialty contractor may take 2+ craft contracts where the other work is "incidental and supplemental"; a licensed contractor may do out-of-class work under $1,000 with no permit — but NEVER plumbing, electrical, refrigeration or AC. S-NV-624-220
Recorded, not smoothed

The board's classifications page heading says "42 Subcategories" while its own FAQ #9 says "36 separate primary C license classifications" and the NAC enumerates exactly 36 primary C sections — a soft inconsistency inside official pages; the statutory/NAC enumeration governs on this site (research §C). Class A (General Engineering: fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill — e.g. A-7 Excavating and Grading, A-10 Pools, A-16 Paving, A-23 Asbestos) and Class AB (qualified in both A and B) exist but are not seeded: no product answer turns on them.

The provisions of this subsection do not authorize a person licensed in subclassification B-7 to increase the existing enclosed space of the residential structure.NAC 624.170(7)S-NV-NAC-170
The B-7 boundary — why additions are B-2 work

NAC 624.170(7) verbatim: "The provisions of this subsection do not authorize a person licensed in subclassification B-7 to increase the existing enclosed space of the residential structure." A remodel that stays inside the existing envelope is B-7; the moment enclosed space is added, B-2 answers (rule NV-REMODEL-CLASS). Class B itself only attaches where a prime contractor's job uses "more than two unrelated building trades or crafts" — single-trade work is C-class specialty territory.

The three-way solar boundary

Photovoltaic roof tiles that replace existing roofing are C-15a (NAC 624.320); PV cells, batteries and inverters are C-2g (NAC 624.200 — but NOT electrical wires beyond the service panel); solar THERMAL — heating/cooling water, air and chemicals — is C-37 (NAC 624.540). Three classifications, three verbatim scopes, no merging.

04 How each credential is earned

  • Qualifying individual — four full years of experience as journeyman, supervising employee or contractor in the specific classification within the preceding 15 years, as a bona fide member or employee of the business (NRS 624.260). S-NV-624-260
  • Exams — the qualifying individual must pass the Business and Law (CMS) exam plus the trade exam specific to the classification requested, unless waived — via PSI (Las Vegas, Reno, Elko); 3 attempts, pass within 6 months of filing, third failure voids the application (reapply after 30 days). "Not all classifications require a trade exam" — but the board never published WHICH, so no classification here is called exam-free. S-NV-REQ-PAGE
  • Waivers — endorsement (4 years active licensure, no discipline) and NASCLAI-accredited routes waive the trade exam/experience; whether the B&L exam can also be waived is CONFLICT-NV-004 below. S-NV-NAC-600
  • Financial statement — always required, in one of four tiers by requested monetary limit (the $10k–$25k band is contested — CONFLICT-NV-002). S-NV-REQ-PAGE

05 Deterministic scope limits

  • nevada:c-1 — pipes and vents for lp and natural gas into buildings (NAC 624.190 (C-1g)) S-NV-NAC-190
The gas-piping boundary next to C-1h water heaters (connection to EXISTING gas lines is C-1h; new piping into the building is C-1g).
  • nevada:b-2 — construction and remodeling of houses up to 3 stories above and 1 story below ground (NAC 624.170(2)) S-NV-NAC-170
The answer when a project adds NEW enclosed space or is new construction — including home additions, because B-7 may not increase enclosed space (SCOPE-NV-B7-NO-ADD). Rule NV-REMODEL-CLASS picks B-2 vs B-7 from the enclosed-space fact.
  • nevada:b-7 — remodeling and improvement of existing detached stand alone single family residences (NAC 624.170(7)) S-NV-NAC-170
No dollar trigger of any kind — Nevada has no licensing threshold (REQ-NV-NO-THRESHOLD-001).
  • nevada:b-7 — increasing the existing enclosed space of the residential structure (NAC 624.170(7)) S-NV-NAC-170
The home-addition boundary in one sentence — rule NV-REMODEL-CLASS evaluates facts remodel_adds_enclosed_space / project_adds_enclosed_space and returns B-2 when space is added. Also why the standalone home-addition page is withheld: the answer is fully determined by this row + NRS 624.700 (research §L/§R).
  • nevada:b-6 — interior remodeling of commercial structures including over three stories (NAC 624.170(6)) S-NV-NAC-170
  • nevada:b-6 — installation removal or modification of structural mechanical fire protection or life safety systems (NAC 624.170(6)) S-NV-NAC-170
  • nevada:c-1 — any c 1 subclassification work (NAC 624.190) S-NV-NAC-190
  • nevada:c-1 — plumbing systems sanitary drainage hydronic heating irrigation potable water heating and building edge piping (NAC 624.190 (C-1d)) S-NV-NAC-190
The plumbing answer for fixtures, vents and potable-water systems (bathroom-remodel page).
  • nevada:c-1 — installation replacement and repair of water heaters with connections venting (NAC 624.190 (C-1h)) S-NV-NAC-190
The water-heater-replacement page's license answer, verbatim — rule NV-PLUMBING-CLASS. This subclass exists within primary C-1; it is not a separate license (FAQ #10).
  • nevada:c-1 — heating evaporative cooling and air circulation systems including solar equipment (NAC 624.190 (C-1f)) S-NV-NAC-190
The non-refrigeration heating/evaporative-cooling path — rule NV-HVAC-CLASS picks C-1f vs C-21 from the equipment facts.
  • nevada:c-1 — cooling systems which use refrigeration as an integral part of the system (NAC 624.190 (C-1f)) S-NV-NAC-190
Half of the C-1f/C-21 heating-cooling boundary that rule NV-HVAC-CLASS evaluates.
  • nevada:c-2 — electrical wires fixtures apparatuses raceways conduits and wind energy conversion systems (NAC 624.200) S-NV-NAC-200
  • nevada:c-2 — residential wiring up to 600 volts on structures up to 3 stories (NAC 624.200 (C-2f)) S-NV-NAC-200
The usual residential electrical answer — rule NV-ELEC-CLASS evaluates the voltage/story facts (missing facts → NOT_DETERMINED).
  • nevada:c-2 — photovoltaic cells batteries and inverters up to the service panel (NAC 624.200 (C-2g)) S-NV-NAC-200
The PV-electricity leg of the three-way solar boundary: PV roof tiles replacing roofing = C-15a; PV cells/batteries/inverters to the panel = C-2g; solar thermal = C-37 (research §D).
  • nevada:c-3 — carpentry repairs insulation overhead doors and drywall (NAC 624.210) S-NV-NAC-210
The minor-repair/carpentry classification behind most non-exempt small-job answers (rule NV-REPAIR-EXEMPT context).
  • nevada:c-4 — painting decorating wallcovering surface prep drywall metal studs acoustical tile (NAC 624.220) S-NV-NAC-220
  • nevada:c-5 — concrete pour place finish install forms sealants and coring (NAC 624.230) S-NV-NAC-230
  • nevada:c-15 — installation application alteration and repair of watertight weatherproof roof materials (NAC 624.320 (C-15a)) S-NV-NAC-320
The roof-replacement page's license answer, verbatim — rule NV-ROOFING-CLASS. Note PV roof tiles are expressly inside C-15a; their electrical side is not (SCOPE-NV-C15A-NO-ELECTRICAL).
  • nevada:c-15 — installing conduits inverters batteries or electrical connections (NAC 624.320) S-NV-NAC-320
The C-15a/C-2g boundary that rule NV-ROOFING-CLASS publishes; C-37 covers solar THERMAL (research §D).
  • nevada:c-20 — installation of ceramic and other tile like products by suction and adhesives (NAC 624.370) S-NV-NAC-370
The tile component credential on the bathroom-remodel page.
  • nevada:c-21 — installation repair service and maintenance of temperature control equipment and related ductwork (NAC 624.380 (C-21b)) S-NV-NAC-380
    The HVAC-replacement page's license answer — rule NV-HVAC-CLASS.
  • nevada:c-21 — c21d maintenance work outside parts replacement condenser air handler or design altering work (NAC 624.380 (C-21d)) S-NV-NAC-380
'Is a tune-up enough, or does this need the full AC license?' — the maintenance-limit boundary published on the hvac-replacement page (research §L.4).
  • nevada:c-37 — solar thermal systems to heat and cool water air and chemicals (NAC 624.540) S-NV-NAC-540
The thermal leg of the three-way solar boundary published on the classifications page (research §D).
  • nevada:c-39 — devices for the heating of buildings including wood burning devices (NAC 624.560) S-NV-NAC-560
  • nevada:c-39 — piping ducting and equipment for transmitting the heated air or water (NAC 624.560) S-NV-NAC-560
Why water-heater replacement is C-1h and NOT C-39 (research §L.5) — published on the water-heater page next to SCOPE-NV-C1H-WATER-HEATER.

These limits feed the deterministic rules (NV-ROOFING-CLASS, NV-REMODEL-CLASS, NV-ELEC-CLASS, NV-HVAC-CLASS, NV-PLUMBING-CLASS, NV-SPECIALTY-INCIDENTAL) that project pages evaluate first.

Source BS-NV-FAQ

NSCB General Requirements FAQ #19 (same page, same read): the endorsement waiver is described as waiving the TRADE exam and the experience certification — silent on the Business and Law exam, implying it is not what the endorsement waives.

OPEN — both texts sit on the SAME official board page and do not clearly agree on whether a B&L waiver is available to endorsement applicants. HANDLING: REQ-NV-EXAM-WAIVER-001 carries confidence 'conflicting' and publishes both readings; NO deterministic rule asserts that the B&L exam can be waived by endorsement (rule engine stays conservative — research §J/§O).

Analysis notes

Detected 2026-10-04 while reading FAQ #5/#19 for REQ-NV-EXAM-WAIVER-001. NAC 624.600(2)-(3) waiver mechanics are not themselves in conflict — only the B&L overlay.

Checked and found consistent

The verbatim NAC scope texts (Cornell LII reproductions carrying the board's LCB amendment notes) agree with the board's own classification page wherever both quote the same scope; the FAQ #9 count (36) agrees with the NAC enumeration — only the board page's "42 Subcategories" heading diverges, recorded above.
