Arizona Contractor License Fees
The Registrar of Contractors' license fee schedule, marked Effective 7/1/2014 and authorized by A.R.S. §32-1126, §32-1126(G) and A.A.C. R4-9-130. Every amount below is a two-year license figure — not a building permit fee, which is local.
01 State fees vs local permit fees
- State licensing fees — listed below, collected by the ROC under A.R.S. §32-1126 and R4-9-130. S-AZ-ROC-FEES
- Local permit fees — building permits, their plan review, inspections and fees are run by the city or county (documented example: the City of Phoenix permit pages). No local permit amount is published on this site: LOCAL_AUTHORITY_REQUIRED. S-AZ-PHX-PERMIT
02 New license (two years)
| Family | Total | Breakdown | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Commercial (A, B-1, B-2) | $780 | Two-year license: application $200 + license $580 + recovery fund $0. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Specialty Commercial (C) | $580 | Two-year license: application $100 + license $480 + recovery fund $0. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| General Residential (B, B-3…B-10) | $870 | Two-year license: application $180 + license $320 + recovery fund $370. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Specialty Residential (R) | $720 | Two-year license: application $80 + license $270 + recovery fund $370. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| General Dual (KA, KB-1, KB-2) | $1,050 | Two-year license: application $200 + license $480 + recovery fund $370. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Specialty Dual (CR) | $850 | Two-year license: application $100 + license $380 + recovery fund $370. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
The recovery-fund component ($370 in the residential and dual rows) is the alternative-path assessment: residential and dual licensees pay it per two-year period, OR post a $200,000 surety/cash bond instead (A.R.S. §32-1126(G) caps the assessment at $600 per period). S-AZ-ROC-FEES
03 Two-year renewal
| Family | Total | Breakdown | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Commercial | $580 | License $580 + recovery fund $0. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Specialty Commercial | $480 | License $480 + recovery fund $0. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| General Residential | $590 | License $320 + recovery fund $270. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Specialty Residential | $540 | License $270 + recovery fund $270. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| General Dual (…KE, KO) | $750 | License $480 + recovery fund $270. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Specialty Dual (CR) | $650 | License $380 + recovery fund $270. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Late renewal penalty | $50 | A.R.S. §32-1126(D): the penalty for failure to apply for renewal is $50; A.R.S. §32-1125(B): reactivation within one year of suspension = renewal fee + $50 (after one year, a new application and license). Consistent across §32-1125(B), §32-1126(D) and the ROC renewal checklist — checked, no conflict. | S-AZ-1126 |
Reactivation within one year of suspension = the renewal fee for the family PLUS $50 (A.R.S. §32-1125(B)); after one year, a brand-new application and license — so there is no single reactivation number to publish, and none is invented here.
04 Examination fees
| Exam | Amount | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| AZ Statutes & Rules Training Course and Exam (SRE) | $61 | Via Gmetrix; mandatory unless the applicant was an Arizona qualifying party within the past 5 years (ROC applying page — see REQ-AZ-EXAM-001). | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| Trade exam (PSI) | $66 | PSI, online or test centre; passing score 70%. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| NASCLA Commercial General Building exam (alternative for KB-1/B-1, KB-2/B-2) | $106 | $106 base agrees on both ROC pages. The NASCLA-side charge is quoted at $25 on the applying page and $30 on the fees page — CONFLICT-AZ-001 is OPEN, so NO ancillary amount is published here; only the agreed base fee is shown. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
| NASCLA Electrical exam (alternative for CR-11/C-11/R-11) | $116 | $116 agrees on both the applying page and the fees page. | S-AZ-ROC-FEES |
05 NASCLA commercial exam — open conflict
The fee for these exams is $106 plus the $25 application fee. The application fee is paid directly to NASCLA and the examination fee to PSI Exams Online.
Applying for a License | Arizona Registrar of Contractors (official)The fee for these exams is $106 plus the $30 transcript purchase. The transcript purchase is paid directly to NASCLA online…
License and Renewal Fees | Arizona Registrar of Contractors (official, effective 7/1/2014)OPEN CONFLICT — neither value is published as the NASCLA ancillary charge. Same exam (NASCLA Commercial General Building, accepted for KB-1/B-1 and KB-2/B-2), two live official ROC pages, same retrieval date. Whether this is ONE charge quoted at two amounts or TWO separate charges is not resolvable from the two pages. The $106 base fee agrees on both pages and IS published; the NASCLA-side amount ($25 vs $30) is withheld until the ROC reconciles the pages.
Analysis notes
Detected on 2026-10-02 while building the Arizona fee table: FEE-AZ-EXAM-NASCLA-BLDG carries only the agreed $106 base, with this conflict named in its notes. Both electrical NASCLA ($116) and PSI ($106) figures agree across the two pages — the discrepancy is limited to the NASCLA-side amount on the commercial building exam.
The NASCLA row in the exam table above is DELIBERATELY limited to the agreed $106 base — neither conflicting ancillary value renders as a fact while the conflict is open.
06 Statutory caps
A.R.S. §32-1126(A) caps biennial license fees per family — original: residential general ≤$500, commercial general ≤$1,500, dual general ≤$2,000, residential specialty ≤$350, commercial specialty ≤$1,000, dual specialty ≤$1,350; renewal: ≤$320, ≤$1,000, ≤$1,320, ≤$270, ≤$900 and ≤$1,170 respectively — and every amount on the ROC fee schedule (effective 7/1/2014) was checked family by family and is within its cap; §32-1126(G) caps the residential recovery-fund assessment at $600 per biennial period (ROC charges $370).

Read VERBATIM 2026-10-02 (HTTP 200). (A) biennial fee caps per family (original and renewal); (C) reexamination fees; (D) $50 penalty for failure to apply for renewal; (E)-(F) separate examination fees and private testing contracts; (G) residential recovery-fund assessment capped at $600 per biennial period. Every ROC published fee amount was checked family-by-family against the §32-1126(A) caps (all within cap) — see REQ-AZ-FEE-CAPS-001.
The §32-1126(A) caps are stated for the license fee itself; the ROC tables include the recovery-fund assessment in their totals, which is capped separately by §32-1126(G). Every family amount on this page was checked against its cap during research — no fee conflict arises between the schedule and the statute.
